Prior to 1911, employees hurt on the job had to sue their employers for damages. Workers Compensation laws were enacted to make litigation less costly for both the employer and employee and to eliminate the need for the injured worker to prove the employer was at fault.
To help employers comply with these laws, insurers developed workers compensation insurance. This form of insurance provides compensation for employees who are injured on the job. Today, most employers are required to carry workers compensation insurance, and in most states heavy fines may be imposed on those employers who do not.
